BAHMULLER Folder Gluer

PacDrive retrofit of obsolete controller, drives, and motors to new PacDrive 3 hardware.

SCOPE OF WORK

As a system integrator for Schneider Electric PacDrive products, Orbit was contacted by a corrugated box manufacturer to upgrade their dated Bahmuller folder gluer. The Bahmuller machine featured an obsolete Siemens master PLC, and an obsolete Max-4 ELAU controller along with drives and motors approaching obsolescence (now obsolete as of 2019). The main task for OMS was to replace the obsolete hardware in phases to reduce downtime of the machine. Orbit performed the upgrade over the span of many months and in several different stages. The scope of work performed by OMS consists of the following:

Replace obsolete Max-4 controller, MC-4 drives, SM Servo Motors
Convert the program from PacDrive M to PacDrive 3
Create a new HMI operators’ station with input from maintenance personnel and operators
Replace Siemens master PLC with new LMC controller (previously installed)
Replace Profibus I/O with Schneider TM5 I/O via Sercos communication protocol
Replace pneumatics with Schneider servos to increase cycle time
